On Wednesday 22nd October Stephen Conway undertook a 10km walk in aid of Smile4Wessex. Following a diagnosis of a brain abscess in February 2025, Steve underwent lifesaving surgery at the Wessex Neurological Centre, under the expert care of Miss Roach.

Prior to his illness, Steve had walked 10km every day for over 20 years, and annually walked 100km in aid of Macmillan following a cancer diagnosis 15 years ago. Steve has been gradually building his walking distance back up over the last few months with the support of his neuro physiotherapist Cath, and she accompanied him on this first 10km walk since his operation.

Steve chose to support Smile4Wessex as he wanted to give back something to the unit that saved his life.

"I was initially reluctant to do this as a sponsored event as my usual distance for that is 100km & 10km didn't feel a justifiable distance. However, my wife & a few friends persuaded me that I should, especially given that I am lucky to be here! It was an obvious choice to raise funds for Wessex Neurological Unit, for not only saving my life, but the amazing care I received both on ICU & on the ward. "

We'd like to thank Steve for choosing to support Smile4Wessex by raising funds for the Wessex Neurological Centre, and wish him well for his continued recovery.
