When Glen Sword and his sons, Jordan and Harrison, set off to cycle the 100-mile route of the South Downs Way on 3rd of September, they did so in memory of their amazing wife and mum, Micala, and to honour their promise to her to raise as much as they can for Smile4Wessex and the Wessex Neurological Centre. They were joined by Oliver Martindale and Gary Skerratt for the two-day challenge, which will saw them camp overnight around the half way mark before continuing the ride the following day. And this is just the first of a series of challenges that they and others are undertaking in Micala's memory, and daughter, Alanis, explains why.
"The Wessex Neurological Centre was a massive part of her Brain Tumour journey. From the moment she had the MRI scan (in November 2014) to her care days before her death (in April 2016), nothing was ever too much and they always went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure she was well cared for. She was the first person to try the 5-ala fluoride drink whilst in operation (made possible by Smile4Wessex's purchase of the Leica M720/OH5 operating microscope) - which extended her life and the qualility of it, enabling us as a family to make many valubale memories. We can't thank them all at the Wessex enough for what they've done for us as a family."
Next on the list of challenges are:
Friend Michelle Martindale is having a 'dry' September.
Glen Sword will be running the Great South Run - in a donkey costume!
