On the 2nd May Helen Webster will be tackling the island’s beautiful but tough coastal paths, as she takes on the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge in aid of Smile4Wessex.
When she was a child, Helen contracted meningitis, which left a scar on her brain causing severe epilepsy, and for years she lived with unpredictable seizures, which had a huge impact on her life.
However, thanks to the specialist teams at the Wessex Neurological Centre, Helen underwent an operation to repair the scar on her brain.
This year marks 20 years since Helen's operation and we're delighted to hear that she remains seizure free, which is something that she never thought would be possible. To celebrate this milestone Helen wanted to take on this challenge to say thank you and give back for the treatment she received, by raising funds for the unit, so that others can benefit from the same life-changing care and research.
