Each year, more people are admitted to hospital with a head injury as the result of a fall than through road traffic accidents. In early January 2014, when he fell down a flight of just 5 steps, Kenny Ferguson became another victim of this perhaps surprising statistic.

Kenny, who originally hails from Scotland but at the time lived and worked in Southampton, was admitted to the Wessex Neurological Centre where he underwent two life-saving operations and spent a total of five weeks, three of which were in Neuro Intensive Care. 

Since then, family and freinds have already undertaken two fundraising challenges to raise funds for Smile4Wessex, walking from Holywood to Bangor (in Northern Ireland) and climbing to the 2,333ft (711m) summit of Tinto Hill in South Lanarkshire. But now Kenny is to take on his own, huge personal challenge, to walk the 96-mile length of the West Highland Way.

Although Kenny has made a remarkable recovery so far, he has been left with a dropped foot, little movement in his right arm and aphasia which has affected his speech. It has been an ambition of his for quite some time to walk the West Highland Way, and he is determined not to let his brain injury get in the way of this ambition.

Kenny, who will be joined for the walk by his sister Dora and great pal 'Hutch', wants to use this opportunity to "give something back" in thanks for the life-saving operations and care he received at the Wessex.

Team Kenny hope to complete the walk in just 7 days, meaning they'll need to average almost 14 miles each day across some of the most demading terrain.
