KIck4Rick Dinner Dazzles De Vere Diners
Date   06-06-2009
Description   On 11th August 2007, Ricky Fernandez’s life changed in an instant. Ricky, a community coach with Southampton Football Club, was involved in a road traffic accident whilst riding his motorcycle. On arrival at the Wessex Neurological Centre it was clear that the injuries he’d sustained were among the worst that had ever been seen at the centre. Suffice to say his condition was critical and several operations were required to stem the bleeding on his brain alone, and a total of 48 platinum coils were inserted. But thanks to the skill and dedication of the team of Wessex Neurological Centre staff who cared for him, Ricky has made a quite remarkable recovery.

To show their appreciation, Ricky and the rest of the Fernandez family organised a glittering event at Southampton’s De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel. The ‘Kick4Rick’ Dinner & Dance attracted over 220 friends & family, including a number of the neuro team who looked after him, and the BASICS doctors who attended Ricky at the scene of the accident. Ticket sales, sponsorship, raffle tickets and an auction of a number of unique sporting memorabillia and other items raised just over £20,000 for the WNCT. Of course, the Fernandez family can be extremely proud to have raised such an astonishing amount but, as for everyone else in the audience, the family’s most memorable moment must surely have been the standing ovation for Ricky as he walked to the stage to deliver his own personal thanks to those who helped to save his life.

And our grateful thanks go to all who attended, but most especially to the Fernandez family (pictured below) for staging such a hugely enjoyable and successful event.
