Smile4Wessex Charity: Fundraising
    Guernsey Golfers Tee-rific Total
Date   12-06-2009
Description   Our Guernsey Golf Day, now in its third year, was again sponsored by RBSI & Lombard and was contested by 21 teams, including three teams who flew into the island from the mainland to compete for the trophy. A warm sunny day greeted the 84 players to the course at La Grande Mare, situated on the beautiful west coast, but a stiff breeze made the tight course a real challenge. Reigning champions, ‘The GBGs’ eventually emerged as winners in a very closely fought battle for the honours, carding a score of 83 points to win by just one point.

The dinner which followed, and at which many of the golfers were joined by their partners, was a lively affair with much talk of missed putts and sliced drives. But spirits were high and feverish bidding at the after dinner auction lifted the total raised on the day to just over £14,000 (bringing the total over the last 3 years to over £41,500). Our sincere thanks go to organisers Glyn Smith, John Southwell & Paul Wheatley, and to all who so generously supported the event, particularly those who provided (and bid on) items for the auction, which included a signed Portsmouth FC shirt, one weeks accommodation in a converted barn at Les Angles in the Eastern Pyrenees, a programme of the 1966 Word Cup Final signed by ten of the team, and six months free full-page advertising in Guernsey’s favourite monthly magazine, ‘GBG’ which alone raised £3,000 on the night! Those present are already looking forward to the 2010 event, and to continuing Guernsey’s remarkable support for this charity.
